Analogies for Space Exploration
Many of us looking at logistics and supply chain operations in space have been studying "analogies" for space operations. Space operations, especially the manned space operations planned to the Moon and to Mars (and beyond) have some extremely unique aspects to them, but that does not preclude us from seeking various other terrestrial expeditions that have aspects to their missions that are similar to missions off the planet. It is our hope that, by studying these analogous missions, we can better prepare for the challenges we will face. Several broad categories of analogies that have been discussed include the westward expansion during the growth of the United States, scientific expeditions to remote locations including the arctic and the antarctic, and US Military operations around the globe.
I have written on my personal blog at http://theprofessornotes.com about another NASA effort, NEEMO, that is designed to understand the operational concepts of long-duration missions in an unfamiliar (in the case, water) environment. This is one of many NASA efforts that have sought out environments where some aspect of the situation mirrors a condition that would be found "off world."
As we start looking at analogies, there are various aspects of support that can be considered. These areas include (but are not limited to) the design of the various systems for support, planning for sustaining long term operations, and developing contingencies in the event of the unexpected.
Let's use this forum to share ideas for analogies that we can discuss and refine. Perhaps a discussion of what types of expeditions, operations, or operating environments could be considered for analogies, and what aspects make these worthy targets for analysis as analogies for logistics and supply chain operations.
